What an absolutely marvelous book. John Berendt weaves together numerous stories and personalities to create one coherent depiction of Savanah in all its splendor and darkness. The people that he describes are so absurd, pompous, and absolutely hilarious that you easily forget that this is a work of non-fiction. The diverse cast of characters combined with a murder trial make this book extremely entertaining and morbidly endearing.

As much as you hate the high society characters and their fake inclusivity you also find yourself enjoying their insignificant drama from a distance. I would not want to be a part of their extravagant parties and elegant lifestyle but I still find myself watching with a strange curiosity. This is an interesting book to dissect in terms of its comments on race, politics, and gender rights. I found myself commenting on how things have changed and yet remained the exactly same in the decades since the events of this book took place. Definitely something for the individual reader to delve deeper into on their own.

I wavered between three and four stars. I found it an interesting story but I wasn't all that invested in it and I almost felt like I had to push myself to finish it.

For a nonfiction book, this was captivating, well-written and researched, and a quick read! I found myself sucked into the life of Savannah, Georgia and its many intriguing characters. The book itself was a great read and the story the author wrote kept me wanting more. A must read for anyone at all interested history, multifaceted characters, drama, murder, and parties.
