This has been on my shelf for a while now, despite it being a short read. Poignant writing addressed to his son, a young black man. Highly, highly recommend.

I agree with everything Coates says and I don't know what to do about it. But again, that's not the point of the book, to solve things or make white people feel better. It's a letter to his son. It's eloquent and disturbing and very, very true.

Absolutely a must-read. It’s so powerful and really challenged me to think about things differently. Can’t recommend enough.

I listened to this book, read by the author. It was interesting and a little enlightening to hear the perspective of a black man. He started out angry at 'the people who call themselves white' and remained so throughout the book. These are supposed to be letters to his son about what to expect in life as a black man. It is a pessimistic view, which seems designed to increase racial hostility.
