It’s been a bit since I read the first two.. but I think that this one might be my favorite! I did not think I was going to like Harry much, but he quickly grew on me. Plus that prologue started him off on a good note. I really enjoyed Lady Sabrina and her role in the whole thing. The book was good and the story enjoyable!

This book was hard to rate. I liked the main character but couldn't stand Henry at all. His pitifulness wasn't worth finishing out and resolving. The premise sounds interesting though! I love Kilpack's books, but this one was a miss with me.

Thanks to the publisher via NetGalley for the book!

The book start with Sabrina who's husband is abusive. This is glossed over. It would have given the book more depth is it gave more attention to Sabrina's emotions. Now it was more a detached background story. The romance in this book lacked chemisty. I didn't really like Harry. He is a gambler and is on the brink of losing everything. I like how Sabrina helps others, which is unusual for the time period the book is set in. Overall I liked the book.

I loved this story.

Content: clean - mild violence, passionate kissing, talk of mistresses etc

This regency romance was quite different than others I had read - but in a good way. The power dynamics were reversed (compared to traditional stories of the Victorian Era) - which was exciting.

This story is about more than love - it is about healing and redemption.

I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lady Sabrina has not had an easy life. Born an illegitimate daughter of nobility, young widow from an abusive marriage, and unable to have children, Lady Sabrina now occupies her time running her late husband's estate... and a side job, where she takes on the mantle of "Lord Damion". As Lord Damion, she rescues foxes; not the animal (well, depending on how you look at it...) but rather the young men of society who have ruined themselves with drink and gambling.

Harry Stillington is one such fox and desperate when his debts grow too large. He seeks Lord Damion, a mysterious benefactor who pays off debts in exchange for a complete 180 and become an upstanding member of society. Again, Harry is desperate. But on his way back from his meeting with the incognito Lord, he is attacked by the men of a well-known money lender, left for dead. Until a Lady Sabrina happens to walk past...

This was admittedly a lot more of a Christian Romance than I was expecting (especially having read other books from the same imprint previously, none of the previous titles having put as much emphasis on religious aspects; not necessarily a complaint, but it did throw me off a bit), "Rakes and Roses" is a fine romance about second chances at life, finding self-worth, and finding someone who loves you--even knowing all about your past.

I had a hard time getting into the story. I think it may have been because I was not cheering for the male counterpart until he made some life changes. All in all, the story was cute. A quick, easy read. This was probably my least favorite of the Mayfield series so far.

Quick read. Cute story. I felt that Harry was a little too easily changed and cleared of his past. However, the storyline didn’t give him much choice either.
