I have a bone to pick, and it is NOT with SJM - it’s with members of her fandom.

The way people talk about this book online I was expecting it to be BORING and for Chaol to *finally* be a giant douche-canoe that I would end up hating since everyone else hates on him… 

To me, the beauty of all these Maasverse books has been people/fae/whatever have big, emotional reactions (like humans are supposed to). Her characters feel deeply and grow and learn and evolve and adapt. I HATE how so many people who like these books praise female characters (like Nesta or Manon) for their healing journey and growth, BUT FOR SOME REASON DON’T WANT MALE CHARACTERS TO DO THE SAME.

I’ve been pro-Chaol from the beginning. Does he mess up? Yes. Does he question everyone and everything and sometimes get confused about what he believes in? Yes! He’s a human being! I’ve certainly done all of these things and I understand him so much.

If you’ve ever felt depressed and unloveable, this book is almost triggering. 😅 I had more of an emotional reaction to this one than any of the others so far. It might be my favorite of them so far - I know that’s a hot take, but I’ll stand by it! I’m so proud of my boy Chaol ❤️

I liked this book more than I expected to considering I went into it kind of indifferent about Chaol. Still glad I did the tandem read. Definitely worth it for the way both books wrapped up nicely together and actually finishing with this book was definitely better.

I'm so angry that Tower of Dawn was the best book of this series because I truly detested Chaol. Correct, past tense. I no longer detest Chaol. He's an obedient chucklehead who had to realize so many things, especially about Aelin, until this book but I'm glad that he finally did. 

The reason I loved this book was actually other characters. First, Yrene. She and Chaol made sense, sure. But she's still too good for that chucklehead. 

I knew that Nesryn was too good for Chaol even before and this book ensured me. And Sartaq. My lovely, brave, stupidly in love with Nesryn Sartaq. I freakin' love him. His crush on Nesryn long before meeting her was heartbreakingly good. I went "Aw" so many times. 

Borte and Hasar just HAVE TO meet Aelin. Especially Hasar would love Aelin (at least, after a while). I think Borte would stress Aedion all the time like Aelin does. And I think Aedion and Sartaq would like each other very much.

I already cannot wait for Falkan and Lysandra to meet. When I realized that Falkan was related to Lysandra, I was so happy. Damn you, Maas for getting me all invested in all these characters. And making Chaol bearable. 

I'm already anxious about the Kingdom of Ash. But I'm starting the book immediately at the same time.

slower than the other books and less interesting, i wish it had been shorter because it felt so long for no reason. i really loved all our main characters and the reveals in this book, i can’t wait for Kingdom of Ash!!

I hate this book with every fiber of my being. Chaol Westfall is an awful character who defers only suffering, and I think poor darling Yrene deserved better. All of the twists? Absolutely saw them coming. The blatant and sickening ableism in this book? Disgusting. The only reason I didn’t DNF was because I would’ve been upset that I let a book beat me, and I’d already spent 8 1/2 hours slogging through it.
