Great follow up to "Three Days to Dead" (one of my favorite books of 2009). Not as fast-paced as the first one, but strong nevertheless. Can't wait for the next one!

Wow, not sure how, but I think this book may have been better than the first. Lots of twists to keep you on the edge of your seat. I love the world Meding has created, the different "dregs", and characters. Phin was a nice addition, and I can't wait to read more!

*Contain Spoilers if you haven’t read “Three Days to dead”

I really enjoyed Kelly’s previous novel, “Three Days to Dead” and have been been looking forward to the sequel ever since I finished it. I’m so happy I got the chance to read the ARC. I had high hopes for this book and was not disappointed.

“As Lie The Dead” starts right after the end of the previous book and if you thought that being tortured. dying. being resurrected in a body that’s not yours, having 3 days to save the world before you die again and being hunted by those you believed where your friends is bad enough for our heroine Evangeline Stone, you have got another thing coming.

Evy is not dead and the immediate threat to her world has been neutralized for now, but things are far from over. The triads don’t take quitting easily and are still considering her to be a rogue that needs to be dealt with. The Owlkin, which she believed had been decimated, have a few survivors left and are depending on her to keep them safe.

Along with that, Evy is still dealing with having 2 consciousness in one body and the after math of the deaths from Three Days to dead. Let’s not forget her new and tumultuous relationship with her former handler, Wyatt, who seems to be keeping many more secrets than she thought possible.

Our beloved heroine is back in style and more damaged than ever. I love Evy and all her flaws. She is loyal, brave, damaged, stubborn and not afraid to kick-ass when necessary. Her relationship with Wyatt evolves a lot in this novel and even though it is clear that it won’t be easy for them to work out, it is definitely worth it and great to follow.

I also really enjoyed the addition of new secondary characters like Phinn, and a closer look into the were population, structures and politics. As Lie The Dead is such an awesome book. I went through it in one sitting and I could not put it down for a second. You get non-stop action, a troubled kick-ass heroine and a great romance all in one neat package of Urban Fantasy awesomeness.

If you haven't checked out Kelly Meding’s Dreg City series yet, you don’t know what you’re missing. There are so many Urban Fantasy novels and series out there, it’s great to read something that at the same time is faithful to the classics and brings something fresh to the table. I recommend it to all Urban Fantasy lovers out there!

Hmm...in a way I feel that giving this book three stars is a bit too generous. I think that you can sum up the problems with this book in one word: Evy.

SpoilerIn Urban Fantasy the heroine is usually in some life-threatening situations and has to fight the bad guy. If said heroine is able to heal unnaturally fast and can bounce back from pretty much any injury-stabbings, broken legs, falling multiple stories, the story becomes a lot less interesting. We already know she's going to survive. If the heroine also has the ability to teleport...she doesn't have excellent control of it yet-the book becomes less interesting, because she can poof herself out of any situation. Also, she seemed pretty damned dumb most of the time. An example of this would be when they're trying to figure out who would want to destroy the triads, she and Wyatt take a VERY long time to come up with the idea that it is most likely someone with a grudge against the triads...um, obviously. Another example of Evy's glaring stupidity-She meets with the Assembly and they tell her she should ask, "the killer she protects" about what's going on...she cannot seem to come up with Wyatt, even though it was obvious to me. What makes this even worse is the fact that there seems to be some kind of build up to Wyatt's hidden secrets-I was not surprised. I think the only person that was is Evy!! It was clear that this was going to be some type of plot device...just as Evy is ready to admit to her feelings for Wyatt...oh no, we find out Wyatt has done bad things. Also, I feel that this book had wayyy too much stuff going on...someone wants to destroy the triads, can we trust Phin, who are the other bi-Shifters, Kismet wants Evy dead, etc, etc...

Not sure that I'll read the next one....

4.5 stars.

This was an awesome sequel! There was action, twists, turns, and some really well-done character growth on Evy's part. I did guess the revelations about Wyatt's past, and Evy did keep walking into situations unarmed. But those are minor complaints. I ultimately found it really hard to put this book down, and I can't wait to return to the world of Dreg City. I really recommend this series if you're looking for dark, gritty urban fantasy with a great world and heroine.

Definitely better than the first. Would've given it a 4 1/2 but there is still something that didn't get me up to the love level.

Ahhh another great adventure for Evy and Wyatt!!! Can't believe all the stuff that happens to these 2 in such a short amount of time, but I love them! Love this series! Very much looking forward to the next book, just hope they get a bit of a break before the next life or death adventure!

Evangeline Stone, a rogue bounty hunter, never asked for a world divided between darkness and light . . .

. . . or the power to die and live again in someone else’s borrowed body. After a murder plot meant to take her out leaves an entire race of shapeshifters nearly extinct, Evy is gnawed by guilt. So when one of the few survivors of the slaughter enlists her aid, she feels duty-bound to help—even though protecting a frail, pregnant shifter is the last thing Evy needs, especially with the world going to hell around her.

Amid weres, Halfies, gremlins, vamps—and increasingly outgunned humans—a war for supremacy is brewing. With shifters demanding justice, her superiors desperate to control her, and an assassin on her trail, Evy discovers a horrifying conspiracy. And she may be the only person in the world who can stop it—unless, of course, her own side gets her first.

I can remember having read this several years ago, and like the first one, I enjoyed it but just don't remember loving it as much as I did then.

I still loved watching Evy try to get the hang of things. Not only Chalice's body but also figuring out what to do with her life now that she's gotten this second chance. In general, she's a great character: sassy, spunky and always ready to fight for the right thing. It was intriguing watching her start to realize that the right thing might not have been everything that she'd thought it was. I liked the fact that she started pulling back and looking at things, not just her new life, but also the impressions she'd had of Dregs this whole time. She did come to a couple of realizations regarding things and it really helped, honestly.

And Wyatt was still awesome. I loved the fact that he's still trying to protect Evy (despite her best attempts to run headlong into danger). Along with Evy's realizations, he had some too and some interesting reveals. His past was a bit of a shocker. I was worried that Evy would push away at several of them, but thankfully, they both realize that they've got a road ahead of them, but neither of them seems willing to let go. Especially since Evy was finally able to vocalize everything she'd been feeling.

This story did a good job of masking who the villain truly was. Some of the motivations were interesting. There was a lot more of the politics for the nonhuman community this time around too. I was a little disappointed that no one got to take out the brass though. I did like Phin and Aurora and company.
