I remember watching the anime as a kid and found the manga at a goodwill and gave it a read.
I remember when I watched the anime there got to a part where I got frustrated and stopped watching but I can’t remember what it was. Reading the manga it was pretty funny and the premise is interesting especially since I’ve been really into isekai romances.

I remember the day when "Curious Play" came on AXN one summer. I watched that first episode and loved it. And since not many of my classmates had cable, I already knew what happened in the show at least a year before anyone else in high school did when the show came out on local TV (Tagalog version eww). This is how I met my best friend--she heard me talking about it and asked me for spoilers.

However, it never occurred to me to read the manga. I knew it was based on a manga, but at the time, I wasn't really interested in it. Don't know why, but I'm starting to remedy that. Reading the first volume took me back to when I was 12, when I was regarded as the FY expert in the entire school. Do you realize how nerdy that is? lol

Anyway...there are quite a number of differences between the manga and the book, and some withheld information. As soon as I'm done with this serial, I am going to rewatch the series. I'm more of a Tasuki fan, but I'm starting to rediscover my crush on Tamahome.

It had been ages when I had last picked up this series. I had just started anime and my neighbor had these on VHS at the time. I ended up borrowing them to watch the anime. I never did finish watching it even after my sister bought the series for both herself and my niece to enjoy.

Now I remember why I didn't finish it: Miaka annoyed the hell out of me. If I thought Bella from Twilight was a massive Mary Sue, then I have met her cousin, Miaka. This special snowflake never seems to grow a backbone nor does she ever become detached from Tomahoma's hip. The bad thing is that everyone is forced to love her because of some prophecy written years ago.

I think I would have poured more into the series if she had learned to stand on her own two feet and become something more. I had this expectation that her need to cling to Tomahoma was nothing more than a phase but it seems to never stop with her. She learns nothing and doesn't even try really once to stand on her own always believing Tomahoma will swoop in and save her.

And he does. ALL THE DAMN TIME.

So yeah. I tried to continue on this series but Miaka's annoying behavior was just the last straw to me ever reading this series further. :/ I think I would have preferred Yui's side.

This series is so highly regarded, being one of the major pioneers for the 90s shoujo isekai trend (similarly to Sailor Moon's influence on the mahou shoujo subgenre), and Fushigi Yûgi was also a major influence on the very first otome game, Angelique. So it's safe to say that my expectations were (and still are) pretty high. And my first impression was... pretty good honestly.

First off, I just want to mention how pleasantly surprised I was to see how silly and comedic the story and characters were from page one. I guess I'm just so used to the more dark and serious fantasy/scifi series, so it was so refreshing to have characters making stupid faces and throwing tables at each other.

As for the story and characters themselves, well I'm a sucker for an interesting take on isekai stories (i.e. not the generic crap that we've been drowning in for years now), and being transported into a book is high on my list of worthy subjects, I mean I AM on Goodreads lmao. I also find the ancient China location to be interesting (probably due to all the danmei).

Miaka is a fun protagonist. I like that she's determined, but not super airheaded, and seems like someone who cares a lot about her friends and family. Tamahome is charming and funny (definitely prefer his sheared hair), what's-her-face-palace-lady is kind of a psychotic brat so far (hopefully she'll improve), and the emperor is hot (nothing else to add there sorry hahaha).

I'm excited to see what this series will do!

I’ve had this manga series for almost 20 years and have yet to read the whole thing through. It’s time for me to get to it! I really enjoy the setup of the first volume - I think it has a great pace, sets up the story nicely without moving too fast or too slow. I also like the mirror between the 2 worlds - what happens to Miaka is reflected on Yui. The artwork is so incredibly detailed and adds so much to the overall story. I’m excited to read through the whole series!
