I used to love this book so much, it was tied with Memory for my all-time favourite Bujold, but I am 20 years older than I was when I first read it, and it no longer speaks to me the way it used to.  It's still a perfectly readable fantasy novel, just not *for me* the way it used to be.

A good book. Interesting magic/theology combination. At times, some slow development of court intrigue. Good women characters, though they suffer from a lot of the usual gendered bullshit you find in fantasy novels that romanticize earlier centuries.

This is a wonderful, tightly-paced fantasy novel.

Another wonderful book by LMB. Really intricate world-building and story. Cazaril is a strangely comfortable(?) narrator to share the story with.

I'm doing Homer's Odysseus this semester - Cazaril reminded me of Odysseus, especially Haim Guri's eponymous poem that talks about Odysseus as a fallen, failed, obscure hero who is shunned and unrecognized.
