I love everyone in this bar Nexus.

I love a good survival plot, man v self conflict, the breakdown of the social contract, and nothing the characters do to improve their situation works so they slowly become the worst version of themselves.

This is a solid (above average even!) video game tie-in novel. I found this series because I was looking up N. K. Jemesin, who I love, and found the second book in the series. It's a good thing that one does not really need to read these in order to enjoy them. They are out of order anyway, if I think about it now, having finished the series. The chronological order should be 2, 3, 1. Doesn't matter, though.

Hough does a good job with the tensions between the various alien groups in a crisis and I saw the shape of things to come. Having already played the game didn't change much about how I read the book and didn't really spoil anything for me. Honestly, I had forgotten some of the characters from the game, so when they turned up in the novel it didn't register until the event that made them important.

So, yeah--if you like survival-y sci-fi, read this. If you like Mass Effect also, that's the cherry on top.

Good lead in to game

It gives some decent background on the starting point of the game but wouldn't be of interest to anyone not playing it. Any answers coming will be found in the game. Somewhat disappointed that the antagonist is "deadly energy field" and "civil unrest".

I actually liked this far better than any of the Mass Effect books previously. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still not amazing literature or anything. The writing has that functional feel to it that gets you from A to B in the story, and it’s obvious this was written on a tight turnover. It really fleshes out
Spoilerjust what happens on the Nexus before you arrive on the scene, something which I went through the game feeling unsettled about and wanting to know more since it has such a big impact on characters and situations you have to deal with in the present. Specifically, the utter chaos that the authors succeed in conveying as the book reaches its climax at last definitively convinced me just how much of a mess it was, how right I was in my choices. Funnily enough, that said, it didn’t warm me to Sloane Kelly, who is the book’s main character. The fact that she’s semi-decent here only makes me feel vindicated.
For sure, the book was much more of an enjoyable romp than Drew Karpyshyn’s somewhat lacklustre books about Anderson.

Okay, yes. Mass Effect: Andromeda has had a chokehold on my heart for a whole month now (and reading this, I am happy to see trusting my guts playing it was the right choice haha). This is the natural step after loving the game so much, right?
I am generally a Bioware whore, because I just *love* the concept of someone stuck in an impossible situation, making the best of everything around them, making the best of them. I love the fascinating worlds, the intriguing politics, I love the action-packed scenes, I love the characters. Of course, I am very biased in reviewing this, and it's almost 100% based on my enjoyment of it and my attachment to the Mass Effect world as a whole (and I've been a fan for six years now).
But I was so involved and captivated by the events of this book! I got this book today, and almost 500 pages later, I finished it today as well. That's how much I was burning in anticipation to see what's happening! (even as I knew, since this book serves as the prequel of the actual video game).

I don't know man. I just love Mass Effect and I enjoyed this, because it had so much of what makes these games memorable. Very excited to continue on!!
