Epic family drama is not usually the sort of story I'm drawn to, but I do like a good sibling tale and I enjoy sampling the work of great writers who don't write in my preferred styles and genres. Tom Hanks narrating a sibling story by Ann Patchett seemed like the perfect opportunity. And it was! I read a few chapters throughout  — enough to know that Hanks's narration probably added a full star of enjoyment to my rating. It's not a fast read either way, but what felt too slow in my hands became a fascinating and skillful unfolding in his.

Interesting and the idea of the house being like a central character felt a little bit different. Definitely an examination of just how messy humans and families can be.

gorgeous writing. like unbelievable beautiful. but though the familial relationships are written with such nuance, all of their main issues surrounding money (the house, schooling, their mother) were just not relatable—- like im sorry that its so hard to
Spoilerspend all of your rich father’s money getting degrees you have no intention to use. i did like that this is addressed through celeste, but idk danny felt a bit out of touch.
anyways i will definitely seek out more of ann patchett’s writing but this story on the whole didnt jive with me
