In its genre, I think it's doing some very refreshing things. I think I fell in love with the food and Scotland more than with the main characters, though. It's a romance book that reflects in its own genre, without becoming satire or making fun of romance readers. Nicely done. Would read again when I feel like I need a break.

There's a brief storyline of a couple kids who are showing signs of neglect. It gets resolved happily, but if that's a trigger and you're unsure, here's a summary of the storyline:

their mum has MS that has rapidly devolved, her oldest was trying to take care of the household and family but it became too much, the kids are dressed poorly for the cold and and the youngest is always dirty, the MC notices, calls social services, they get some permanent help in, and the whole village eventually helps to repair and clean the house, later we see the kids happy and going to school

This is such a sweet little book; a love song to books and book lovers. Some of the funniest moments were those which I, as a 'collector' of books, found far too familiar - who doesn't buy a book to cheer themselves up when they're sad or happy, or when it's raining or sunny! And it's lovely to see how much Colgan clearly loves all things literature.

The first two-thirds felt a bit like elaborate scene setting, which I did enjoy but it seemed to just meander gently along. The final section was much more pacy and really grabbed my attention. I really enjoyed some of the imagery, particularly at a midsummer festival, and all the depictions of the beautiful, wild Scottish Highlands. I found it a really easy, light and affectionate read - if you love books then you should definitely pick this up.

Delightfully sweet book about books that made me want to travel to Scotland immediately (well....when it's safe to do so again). A friend recommended this to me in the same breath as other romance novels, but this turned out to be lowwwwww on the steam scale compared to the other books I read. This was much more about Nina's journey of self-discovery, with a tiny bit of romance mixed in but mostly at the end.

The dedication alone is worth the price of admission (a love letter to readers and reading), and I can't recommend it enough.

Recommended for anyone who needs a very fluffy, light, relaxing read by someone who clearly loves books as much as you do.

Oh, and Lucy Price-Lewis MADE this reading experience (I listened to the audiobook). She handled all of the dialects beautifully, and was just a loving narrator. I want to pick up the next one just to listen to her some more. (Oh wait, I just looked and she doesn't narrate the next one. *sob* I'll just have to seek out her other work.)
