This was really good for a YA novel!!

very much Handmaids Tale x Lord of the Flies x Hunger Games… and therefore it was made for me 😌

The characters were really fleshed out and the concepts it was dealing with were really well explored. I liked the writing style, but it was a bit flowery at times in a way that was detrimental to understanding what the author was trying to say. Also, because it was YA, I found the foreshadowing a bit obvious and therefore saw almost every plot twist.

Went into this expecting a bit more survival and a lot less love story, but overall I still enjoyed it.
Quick read, finished it in one day.
I do like that at the end of the book the main character hasn't magically fixed everything in society through the power of gutsy honesty, and that it takes a more realistic approach of showing small steps towards change instead.

there’s a lot i liked and an ok amount i didn’t. the beginning is rough, parts of the middle feel shallow, and the ending rings a bit hollow, but the breathless pace and tense scenes work well and a lot of the individual moments made me shiver. i’m left wanting more both positively and negatively.

I picked up this book because it was recommended for people looking for more Yellowjackets, and I think on that front it really delivered! Loved seeing how the girls responded to being alone for the first time in their lives, not to mention alone in the wilderness and having to survive. It was every other aspect of the book that made me roll my eyes.

Firstly, there's a semi love triangle, because of course there is. But having the love interest be someone who's literal job is to torture and kill these girls???? Jfc.

Secondly, it doesn't make sense to me that Tierney would be so against the customs of the county when that's all she's known her whole life. The whole time reading it I was thinking "but what if Tierney was a stout believer in the magic and everything? What if it's not until her grace year when she can't find her magic that she begins to realize something's off?" And tbh I think that would be a much more interesting story than a girl who already thinks it's all bullshit from before the book even starts.

Anyways, shout out to the scene where Ryker is telling Tierney about his family while staring wistfully at his figurines and Tierney thinks to herself "I thought the figurines represented girls he's killed, but I'm starting to think they're actually his family" YEAH NO SHIT. you're just STARTING to think that????

This book was pretty much triggering in every way that a book could be... I am being generous and giving it that little .5 extra bc I did feel a little *seen* in the beginning with the intersection-between-religious-conservatism-and-sexism bit.

i really liked this book. 'twas beautifully written, and it made me emotional. the main character is strong and independent. it's like Lord of the Flies meets a Handmaid's Tale. Highly recommend.
