Salt & Stone is just as good as the first book, [b:Fire & Flood|22571272|Fire & Flood (Fire & Flood, #1)|Victoria Scott|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1415892024l/22571272._SY75_.jpg|21861745], but about 2/3 of the way through the book, I started worrying that all the main characters were going to die because there were not enough pages left to wrap everything up. (Don't worry, that doesn't happen)
image of woman covering her face with a phrase stating 'when you're almost done with a book and you realize there aren't enough pages left for all the things that need to happen'

I was particularly anxious because I knew these books had been out for 5ish years and there were only two books in the series, and no mention of a third book anywhere. Not gonna lie, the ending is a bit disappointing, but I guess all things considered, it isn't horrible. It just doesn't exactly resolve the series.

The conclusion resolves the main story arc--
Spoilerthe conclusion of the Brimstone Bleed
--but leaves a lot of important questions unanswered, like:
Spoiler1. Are Tella and Guy and the rest of the "Rambo" crew able to infiltrate the Brimstone Bleed and take it down?
2. What happens with Tella's brother?
3. WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PANDORAS?! (I'm especially upset by this loose end.)

I really hope a final book is published for this series, because I really enjoyed it and I want to know the rest. I would still recommend the series as it stands right now because it definitely hooked me, but it's worth knowing that the series is left open and unfinished.

An adrenaline fueled sequel, more than fulfilling my expectations for this exceptionally tense tale. Each scene just gets better and better and I cannot wait for the final climax!

Wow. I need more.

If you thought Fire and Flood was a thrill ride, you haven’t read nothing yet.

We start the book back at base camp before diving right in to the next segment of the race: the sea. The group take on a few new members as the team paradigm changes. There are a number of boats to choose from and our group ends up on the large pirate ship, along with the addition of a few others and their Pandoras.

As we soon find out, this is just to lull them into a false sense of security before all hell explodes and leaves them wafting through the surging ocean in nothing more than life rafts.

Each leg of the challenge brings striking new dangers but what’s worse is that in this segment is we finally see the lengths of which the Brimstone Bleed runners will go to. They not only plan obstacles to pit Contender against Contender but they also rig those same challenges to make things even more difficult. With this in mind, it’s only a matter of time before the groups are fighting tooth and nail with each other.

After the ocean segment, we move to the mountains, brimming with it’s icy fury where the most obvious route isn’t always the right one. As we see in this segment, there is more than one way to trick our ambitious Contenders.

In the final chapters we see another side of the race, the final tests of dexterity, stamina and logic to be completed with the aid of Pandoras, and this little additional extra is heart-breaking and we barely get time to recover before we are lead behind the scenes and then left hanging. The answers we so desperately seek being held back, cruelly but intelligently, until the next book.

In Salt and Stone, we see Tella’s relationship with the Pandoras grow more profound, even to the point where she seemingly adopts those who have lost their Contenders, such as AK-7, the bear from Fire and Flood, who she quickly dubs Monster. I really love how passionate Tella is towards the Pandoras and we start to see how they in turn are drawn to her, in one particularly interesting stand-off.

In Salt and Stone we see an interesting development in our main protagonist Tella. In the first book, she was very lost, uncoordinated and happy to follow those that knew what they were doing. In particular Guy, who becomes the unofficial leader of the group and also seems to have a soft spot for Tella. But Tella has grown a hell of a lot since we first saw her six weeks ago and she finally takes the step to standing on her own two feet. Guy struggles to see her as an equal through his affections but he eventually allows Tella to make her own decisions and take care of herself.

It was interesting to see a character that was so conflicted between earning Guy’s affections and earning her independence and to see a character who seamlessly manages to achieve both is inspiring. It’s infuriating at times to see a character that is constantly the damsel in distress and the guy is always saving her ass but Tella saves the day more than once with her rational thinking over Guy’s. And none of this takes away from the romance sparking between the two, if anything, I thought it amplified the heartfelt scenes they did have together!

Salt and Stone is one of the few books that didn’t fall victim to the second book slump and with good reason. Loaded with even more action, tension and plot twists than ever before, the pace never lets up, leaving you gasping for breath at the cusp of each chapter.

It’s hard not to fall in love with Victoria Scott’s world all over again. Each scene pulls you another inch off your seat until the final few pages where everything comes crashing together. You will laugh, you will cry and you will scream as Tella and the group are thrown into the claws of danger and be warned, not everyone comes out unscathed.

I for one, cannot wait for the next book and I’m eager to see what will happen beyond the confines of the Brimstone Bleed but one thing is for certain, Victoria Scott will certainly be one of my must read authors from here on out.

I loved it. I really wish that the next book was out already so we could see what Tella and crew is going to do next.

My Review

Getting back into this world was so much fun. I adore and love the world that Scott created. To me, it was filled with great action, intense suspense, enthralling characters, and moments that left me on edge. Though I didn’t remember much of what happened in the first book, it wasn’t long before I was swept away.

The characters in the book are all intriguing. I felt that Scott really did create a wonderful and diverse set of characters. Each brimming with their own uniqueness. I love that they felt a part of the story. Truly feeling like a part of that world. From the minor characters to the main characters, even the ones that got on my nerves, I enjoyed them all.

Tella, well, I enjoy her character quite a bit. I love that she, even after everything she has gone through, still has been able to retain some of that girly girl. I mean, come on, deep down we all love glitter and makeup, even when trying to fight for our lives. I love that part of her, but what I loved more was this girl’s heart. Tella has a fierce, powerful, caring, and strong heart. Watching her interact with every character and Pandora really showed how caring she was. But she's also fierce in her beliefs as well. How she was determined to help, to not let the game turn her or the people she got close to. I admired that.

Guy is silent, fierce, and a very strong character. His personality, his strength and stern nature seeped off the pages. The way the Scoot represented this character made me really love him. I loved that he wasn’t the talking kind of guy, he is an action kind of guy. But he had his moments that really melted my heart. What I loved about him so much was that in this book we got to see him grow, really be challenged and see him fumble at times. His growth really came through. Watching him learn to trust Tella, even step aside and let her take charge made me proud of him.

Tella and Guy are a great balance together. I couldn’t get over that while reading the book. Yes, they do struggle in this one, the world they are in leaves no time for lots of talking to figure each other out and where they stand, but despite everything they were able to find each other and understand each other. It was enjoyable watching them grow and develop through everything.

I also have to mention the Pandoras in this world. I love the idea of the animals, the strange things they can do and the connection they develop with their partner. It was an aspect I enjoyed so much. The worlds that I was also introduced into felt very much real and very scary. I loved the dire I felt while reading. I felt like I was racing for my life at times.

I’m a detail oriented reader, so the only thing I did want more of was more detail. More movement between the action of the characters and the changing of scenes. I enjoyed the fast pace of the book and how everything unfolded. It was really gripping and intense. The character growth was so amazing and one of the best parts of the book as well. And there were a few twists I didn’t see coming either.

Salt & Stone was an intense, action-packed, and a heart-wrenching read. And the ending left me craving and desperately wanting to know what is next for Tella and Guy.

This book was a vast improvement over the first installment. It's more action-packed, the plot is more fast-paced, and the main character's less annoying.

The Pandoras were a very nice touch to what otherwise might have been an exact copy of The Hunger Games. I admit, there are similarities, but there are also a lot of differences that make this book unique.

Although the series may not have kicked off with a great start, I think it sure does progressively pick up as you read through.

I liked Salt & Stone a lot more then Fire & Flood. Correction: I loved it. I've enjoyed all of Victoria's writing so far and I knew she wasn't going to disappoint in Salt & Stone, but crap. I am floored right now.

Just when we thought the people behind the Brimstone Bleed couldn't make it any worse, they do. Tella and the gang must make it through the last two legs of the Brimstone Bleed, ocean and then the mountain. Both equally challenging, dangerous, and deadly. Filled with action, adventure, heart break, and battle Salt & Stone leaves you questioning if we really knew anything about the Brimstone Bleed at all.

During the ocean leg of the race, a few new contenders joined the gang. Willow who has a Rat as a Pandora, Cotton with a Bull, and Mr. Larson with an Alligator along with a new Pandora that Tella took on: an Iguana named Rose. Tella struggles to gain trust in these new people, all while trying to prove to herself to Guy. Tella really toughened up during this novel, she took the bull by the reins and took control of the situation. I liked Tella so much more in this one then in Fire & Flood. She has a bit of a whit to her, as well as being strong, determined and stubborn in all her tasks. Tella is extremely dedicated to her brother, who she is there for. She is also very clever for figuring out the new color bracelets that each contender was given and the betting.

Guy and Tella are both stubborn and determined, put them together and they were do for an explosion eventually. Guy wants Tella to be safe, and it seems to be that he thinks she is helpless. Tella knows she doesn't need Guy and she can do this on her own with out him. Now mix this in with the kiss from Fire & Flood, complicated emotions and different agendas and when have a love interest who probably are going to kill each other. That doesn't mean there wasn't a fair share of steamy scenes though. Tella and Guy do come to see eye to eye in the end though.

I could probably talk about the Pandoras all day. They are all unique with different personalities and abilities. Tella seems to be a magnet for them, they seem to listen to her more then their own contenders sometimes. I've grown to love Monster (a bear) and Madox (a wolf) a lot. In Salt & Stone we are introduced to a Bull who can breathe out red fumes that will knock you unconscious, an Alligator who lets off intense heart, an Iguana who glows in the dark, and a rat who stabs its victim with its tail to make them ill (Though I am a little unclear about that still.) I would love to know where the idea for the Pandoras had come from.

Victoria didn't skip out on the plot in Salt & Stone at all. I actually think it was better done this time around. Everything is so much more intense as the race is coming to an end, characters start to change, the stakes are higher. Everything is amped up to the extreme now. Victoria packed this book with a ton of death, action and heart break. The race is concluded in this book, there is a winner. But I highly doubt this series is over yet. There is still so much unanswered and the ended, though bittersweet, was open ended.

Salt & Stone is probably my favorite sequel in a while now. I didn't fall short of anything. Even though it is still early in 2015 this book has made my list of the best of 2015. I am not sure if there will be another book in this series. I think there will be, and I cross my fingers there will be.
