An excellent succinct distillation of a horrifying Dostoyevskian thought experiment.

In this short story with the impact of a full length novel, Le Guin presents the following scenario:
What if there was a utopia - a place without war, famine, and homelessness, where everyone has what they need. But for an inexplicable reason, one child must endure severe, grotesque, and non-stop torture in order for the needs of the society to be met. All citizens are aware of the situation, knowing that their collective peace must come at this child's expense.
What do you do with that information? Is the suffering of one worth the collective betterment of the many?
Highly impactful, quick read. Definitely recommend!
