I got about halfway through this book before I started doing my own research on Paul Rusesbagina. He seems to have lied about what he really did with the refugees he took in at the hotel and it now in jail in Rwanda, being tried for terrorism amongst other things.
The book was written good and I’m sure some things in here were factual but it’s hard to enjoy it when you don’t know what’s true and what is.

This book should be required reading for the American public.

It was pretty graphic, but not nearly as much as the movie (Hotel Rwanda). I think it gave me alot more insight into how the whole genocidal situation developed in the first place- the kind of details that are tricky to incorporate into a movie plot. It's just so sad in how pointless and brutal the whole thing was.

In rereading this, I'm struck again by the horror of what happened in Rwanda in 1994, and how other countries, organizations failed to help. I also wonder if I could stand up and do what Mr. Rusesabagina did, or would I just run away. I just hope my students take it to heart when they read it.

It is hard to put it into words. Moving, amazing, horrifying, devastating, shameful, hopeful...this book tells a story that is all of these things. Everyone should read it.
