I'm really enjoying this series. I solved the mystery early on for both of the books I've read, but I'm not particularly bothered by that.

Cover: Really lovely. However.... the cover model's silhouette is 1890s, not 1830s.
Narrator: I like her voice, but agree with other reviewers regarding the cadence of her sentences. It's annoying. Luckily it's not so bad at the speed I prefer (currently 1.8x).
Hogwarts Sorting Hat: Kiera is definitely a Ravenclaw. Gage is probably a Gryffindor with Slytherin tendencies.

Series: The Lady Darby Mysteries

Cover/Edition: Classic sweeping planes and facing away model. As far as I can tell there aren't any other editions for me to be jealous of.

Unhelpful One Sentence Summary: An old friend of Lady Darby's unexpectedly returns and is accused of a terrible crime but of course she and Gage are on the case.

Liked:

- I loved seeing Kiera take Gage to task again and again for his lying, his insensitivity, and over protectiveness. Sometimes it was a bit undeserving but it was refreshing to see a historical heroine going "yes there's something between us but this behaviour isn't healthy and I won't let anything happen while we're like this".
- I totally solved the mystery @ around 50%!
Spoiler

- The exploration of historical views of mental illness was interesting and I wasn't expecting it to go through it in such detail.
- The relationship between Keira and her family is so soft and loving. Especially Kiera and Phillip - they're clearly very close and affectionate which is nice because you don't see many in-laws portrayed this way.
- This continues to be a genuinely funny series!!

Disliked:

-Not much? I wish some of the female side character side characters like Elise and Laura were fleshed out more and given more time.

Final Thoughts

This series is scratching my historical romance itch while also giving me something more cerebral to think over. I'm really enjoying this series. So much so that I'm going to put aside the rest of my TBR list to get through it. hehe.

Another enjoyable not-too-heavy mystery starring the artist with a difficult past, Lady Darby, as investigator.

Love Historical Fiction

I like to read book series from the beginning and continue in sequence. A good series allows you to make a connection with the characters and makes you look forward to the next story. Mortal Arts does this well.

This second installment was exactly what I had been anticipating after all the recommendations. I adore Gage and his banter/chemistry with Kiera. I can't wait to learn more about their pasts.

On to book 3!
