Well, shit. This book left me feeling complicated. I can see why many people love it, it was very well written, it was raw and messy and I think it did a really good job of imagining queer possibilities. I also loved the surprise Rogers Park mention!! I think there’s some feelings coming up around immersing myself in a trans femme experience as a trans man, about my own relationship with womanhood and the ways it has evolved before and through my transition. There’s something to be said here about how I think this is the first book I’ve read with a trans woman mc and how that is a big gap in my reading. I’m glad we read this for book club because I don’t know if I would have read this myself.

I loved this book. the characters aren't perfect, and I love that. pregnancy is a topic I'm not usually a fan of, but I thought I would try something new and I'm glad I did. it's definitely a harder book to read due to all the sensitive topics, as well as just generally feeling like a like book to read, but it is so worth it.

This book offers a great perspective into life as a (white) trans woman and the exploration of gender, but feels callously dismissive of the plight of people of color, cis and non-binary. I wouldn’t expect as deep of an expose on their lives (as I’m sure the author doesn’t have the experience), but making any mention of them the butt of a comparison feels… wrong.

The book intrigued me from start to finish and there were some really good moments. I have some reservations about the writing - sometimes it felt very stilted and ‘informative’, especially within sections of dialogue. And there were some leaps characters made where it didn’t feel like the necessary building had been done to get them there. I also didn’t really care much for the characters - Ames was my favourite and he definitely didn’t get enough airtime. I didn’t and don’t think Reese is a good person at ALL and tbh she had really misogynistic views about what made a woman and what made a mother and it felt a little odd in a book that was supposed to challenge gender stereotypes. I was left wanting the characters to have developed a whole lot more through their relationships and experiences than they did. Overall, it was a really interesting delve into different forms of motherhood and gender but just slightly hit the mark for me.

It’s a heavy read, really well written but I might try again when I’m not in the trenches
