I loved this book. the characters aren't perfect, and I love that. pregnancy is a topic I'm not usually a fan of, but I thought I would try something new and I'm glad I did. it's definitely a harder book to read due to all the sensitive topics, as well as just generally feeling like a like book to read, but it is so worth it.

wow. this book was a whole messy meal. I liked it! didn’t like a single character but I think that’s the point. all of you suck!
it feels like both a love letter and hate mail to trans people—cis people idk if your minds can comprehend.
other note: so wordy. I like learning new words but what did I read ❤️ gave up trying to look up the meanings about 50 pages in. kind of unnecessary.

The story gives a lot of insight into some of the quirks and particulars of the trans community, which was cool. It explores what it means to want to be a parent, especially as a trans or queer person, and who is entitled to parenthood.

I thought some of the characters acted in reprehensible ways and barely needed to make amends, while one character in particular barely did anything wrong and spent all their energy atoning.
Namely, Katrina outed Ames as detrans WITH COLLEAGUES and she has a cute session discussing it with Reese but we don't actually see Katrina make amends to Ames. Reese cheated on Amy repeatedly leading to Amy being beaten up by a man, Reese does nothing to fix things, just grovels and then Reese is angry and upset when Ames leaves her and detranisitions, such that when Ames extends an olive branch years later it's like Ames wronged Reese. I get that Reese's bad behaviour is a product of her trauma, but we really saw no evidence that she was working on herself. The beach scene at the end absolves Reese of needing to actually repair her behaviour, because Ames and Katrina feel sorry for her so say it's all fine

I'm kind of torn about what I think about the detrans representation. It suggests Ames detranisitioned because he was sick of transphobia but is really a woman deep down. I suppose this might be some (many?) people's experience. In any case, I thought Reese could have shown more compassion for Ames' choice. I also expect some (many?) people detransition because their gender identity changes over time, and I wonder if this book implicitly disregards that as a possibility. On the other hand, I guess this book doesn't need to capture all experiences, and we just need more stories about de/trans people.

only reason I docked stars is because the ending felt rushed, otherwise this is a 5-star read

This is a beautifully written book, and one of the hardest ones I think I have ever read. There are a lot of people who criticise this book for wrong and ultimately transphobic reasons: I think it is confronting for some people to see trans people in books as, well…people? It’s a fun house mirror  that makes every aspect of darkness you encounter as a trans person, distorting it into larger than life, nightmarish versions of itself - it’s unrealistic for a reason, because how it feels is just as important as how it is.   Is it a hard read sometimes? Yes? Is it because it’s misogynistic? No - that’s just blatant transphobia trying to disguise itself by wearing a feminism t-shirt.

i think watching i saw the tv glow would help amy. is this gauche to say.

very insightful book that hit a little too close to home at certain points, especially in regards to amy's gender troubles and the fears/hope of starting a family not aligned with heteronormative expectations. fantastic. hurt me again! a story that's not afraid to portray an ugliness and beauty so realistic to what trans women/fems may experience in reality. the characters are deeply flawed and so so so human. peters has a powerful command of her prose, i loved how she described certain concepts. i feel a deep ache at all the trauma these women have been through, and it makes me want to give my girlfriend a big fat kiss on the forehead when she wakes up in the morning. and i will, dont worry. anyway please talk to me about this book what the fuck.
