so I went to new york and saw the stage show and at intermission decided to check the book out. and they're both great, honestly, and I think they complement each other well. I know obviously this is a book review but with the show so clearly on my mind it's hard to separate them. the show is like. more fun. it has its moments but it's definitely more spectacle where the book really drives home the drama and emotion. i liked it though :)

The prologue was incredible and I was sucked in from the very beginning. The characters, the train, the circus itself. Gruen didn't just tell me a story. She wrote in a way that allowed me to visualize everything. No spoilers, but I do have to say this. I love Rosie.

Side note: I am finding that I greatly appreciate well-written animals as main characters.

"Nothing happens to me anymore. That's the reality of getting old, and I guess that's really the crux of the matter. I'm not ready to be old yet."

Binge read most of it, super immersive, really great writing, quite explicit at times though, including when a man is sexually assaulted and it is treated like a normal thing to have happened and he is kind of just shamed for it for a bit.

I hated this and was gonna force myself to finish but why bother. It was written well and the story was constructed well, but I hated the subject matter. The circus sucks and people involved should burn in hell for how they treat those animals. I just can’t do animal cruelty so I couldn’t continue reading this. Also, Jacob was basically sexually assaulted and that’s it? I didn’t enjoy how graphic some of it was, it felt gratuitous and unnecessary, not like it was adding to the story at all.
