The narrative voice of this series, it's like a story that's been told for centuries and the author was just the first to write it down. It's beautiful. I haven't read anything that feels similar. AND there's a lot of lesbians

I stuggled with this book feeling as though I didn't undertand the rules of the world it took place in. This is not an action story, but a story of people and connection and the past.

I've heard good things about this book and it's been on my "To Read" for quite some time, but I just never got around to it. Then, I found the audible version and decided to give that a whirl. Thank God for that. After listening to the 1st couple of chapters (which I enjoyed) I realized I could not have read this book. Not because it's not an interesting story, but rather because the author was extremely detailed in the descriptions of the scenery and the lives of the people and as of late, I don't have the attention span to read that. I tend to need more character interaction.

Having said all of that, as an audible with a narrator reading the story to me, I was able to pay attention and enjoy the plot and characters. Interestingly, Janis Ian was the narrator and although I don't enjoy her as a singer, she was a very good narrator. As a result, I would really rate this with 3.5 stars if I could.

well - I was not impressed by the writing. the story was okay... the reader was good. Good enough to carry the story. The characters just didn't feel alive. Mara never did become a whole person - she was just a character - a chess piece. Personality-less. But its okay - I'm glad I read it - I probably wont chase down any more of the series tho...

Beautifully written, I loved the characters, plot, and relationships. I connect to the main character’s way of thinking and feeling. Several times I had to pause after reading a sentence because it felt like I was Tamras. Tamras has reminded me that silence is okay. She has such real relationships with the women around her, it’s like I live in the book. Loved it :’)
