This is a powerful, well-written small book. Although not meant to be a book on social issues, it touches on slavery, spousal abuse, and abortion within the realms of a magical world, sending an insightful message about the social implications. And the story itself keeps you turning until the last page, leaving you wanting to continue with the story. You'll want to read the entire series after it's written.

It has some beautiful prose, such as: "Now she was gone forever— a sapling deprived of sunlight and left to wither and die, forgotten by the very souls who gave her life."
