This was my first read of this author and I’d read more. Loved the start of this twisty tale but towards the end it seemed to tail off a bit which was a shame.

Secrets & drama; this book has plenty! I found this to be a fast paced read and one that I was engrossed with pretty quickly - I had to know who killed Geneva and what everyone else was hiding!

However, I did find that it starts to spin out of control reasonably early. There’s so much going on at once & it becomes a little confusing. While I didn’t like Juniper, I did like the podcast episodes & the effect they had on Frankie, Nadine & Zara. I did think that the ending was tired & overdone - by the time I got there, I was getting tired of all the twists and I found this last one to be a bit ridiculous. In saying that, this popcorn thriller took me on a ride ride with betrayals & reveals, and it was just what I needed.

Thanks to Embala Books & NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I just wasn’t enjoying the writing style - found it awkward (eg. ‘the engine moaned’ is just a weird way to say that she accelerated in a fast car)

As a fan of podcasts, I have to start by saying that I really enjoyed the podcast elements of this book, they gave it a very good flow and kept it a an engaging read for me.  4 friends get buried in secrets and try to dig themselves out, but someone is two steps ahead of them. YouTuber, Juniper Rose is obsessed with solving a cold case involving one of the residents, Geneva O'Connor she has created True Crime Over Wine podcast and is posting videos and interviewing key players. She has landed an interview with Geneva's hubby, who has been questioned by police. She has started her own "suspect list" online and adds new suspects weekly. She always encourages viewers to smash the"like" button and share their own theories. The ladies are understandably jumpy and walking on eggshells, constantly looking over their shoulders, and desperately trying to keep their secrets from coming out. This book definitely kept me guessing and I am happy to say shocked in all the best of ways. An atmospheric, murder mystery type of thriller that kept me on my toes. #thesecretsweburied #beccaday #goodreads #thestorygraph #getlitsy #tea_sipping-bookworm #bookqueen #bookstagram

I loved this! Quite unique in the way it includes transcripts from the YouTube content of Juniper which really helps to get you involved with the case and story.

How it all played out in the end seemed a little unrealistic which is why I would give 4.5 stars instead of 5 but I really enjoyed it. It felt really well thought out and the characters were well fleshed out too.

If there is a sequel then I will 100% be picking it up for a read! The narrator did a fab job on this audiobook.

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No

  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

There were 6-7 main characters in the book, all women, and all unlikeable in one way or another.

There was also lots left to be desired here…

Maybe it was the narration of the audiobook? Or the blandness of the characters who all allowed themselves to become victims (of a dead woman no less)?

Maybe it was the weakness of the men surrounding them? Or the heavily overused social media aspect that annoyed me?  Even the twist ending with a twist wasn’t satisfying. Just so very “meh” in so many ways.
