Pobre.

Considered the first Romantic (not to be confused with Romance) novel. A reread for me. I first encountered Goethe during my 1974 summer in Paris. A quick introduction before tackling Faust.

It took me a little while to get into this story about suicide. Goethe doesn't hold back on the angst. Although it was well-written and short, I am not sure how this book could have caused a surge in suicides in the 1770s.

I never heard of this book until it was required reading for a university course. The journey of Goethe's depressed protagonist with a longing for unfiltered, passionate human connections deeply resonated with me. The novel is certainly not without criticism but thanks to this novel and the course, I may have discovered a new appreciation for works of the literary past.

After reading the following blog post, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steven-moore-/forgotten-classics-you-ne_b_3768429.html, I picked up the English translation of this little treasure. Time well spent.
