I feel like this book was written specifically FOR me. Magic, sword fights, secret identities, countries on the brink of war, characters battling Big Evil forces....... my weakness. Looking forward to book 2!

I was going to review both books of this duology together, but I ended up not being able to finish the second book, so I'll just review this one. I powered through the Lord of White Hell duology despite not being really into it because I wanted to get through this duology since it seemed more my speed, and I really loved Ginn Hale's Rifters series, but it just didn't work for me. It's not that it's terrible, but it's just so long and it didn't feel like much was happening, and I really didn't care much about any of the characters. The romance in this book (and what I read of the second) did work better for me than the other duology, but I didn't find myself nearly invested enough in it to feel like getting through the rest of the plot was worth it. And I mostly feel like I got what I wanted out of the romance in the first book, so I didn't feel the need to keep going. Again, I don't think these are bad books, and maybe I just tried to read them in the wrong mood. I will read more Ginn Hale books in the future on the strength of her Rifter series, but I don't think I'll be reading any more books set in this universe in the future.
