(4.5) this book was weird. very weird. made me feel kind of uncomfortable in a few parts. iykyk. i've learned that murakami writes snapshots, not stories. there's no explosive ending where everything's tied up at the end. these stories start and end, with not too much about it. and there's something comforting and familiar about that.

I just want to thank everyone who let me complain to them about this book while I was reading it for class. I guess this book was character driven, since there was no plot to speak of, but the characters felt contrived and one-dimensional. Way too much incest and use of one of my least favorite words for the male genitalia. Not everything needs to be a metaphor.

This was really good! I never felt like reading it was difficult, it was just so easy to pick up and knock out a chapter. Murakami's style is so simple to read, but he can pack so much meaning into every sentence. There were definitely parts that were confusing, but I was satisfied with the plot overall and thought everything tied up nicely. I will absolutely read this again, as I feel like there are so many small details I looked over. Also, as a side note, it's really strange how Murakami can write in a trans character and be so respectful and accepting (which is great) while writing I think literally every single female character in a sexualized way. It's disappointing for an author that clearly puts so much thought into most aspects of the story to write women the way he does, at least in this work. I haven't read any of his other stuff. Side side note, that cat scene? DISGUSTING

I'm sure it all meant something, I just don't know what. Maybe its nonsensical plot lines all ties together with a pretty ribbon. Why'd they have to kill that many cats though?
