At first, I wasn't very sure about this book. There was some imagery I didn't like, some things that made me a bit uncomfortable. I kept reading because it was like watching a train wreck - I couldn't look away and I wanted to know how it ended. But I realized along the way, that this is a book that focused on the ugly journey that is life. That not all stories are pretty, nor do they end happily. I did enjoy the ending in this book, and loved the twists. It was a hard read at some points, and I probably won't read it again. But I think it was a good book on how life really is at times.

i enjoyed this book much more than i expected to! this is at its core a ghost story, but it also is a story about family relationships and secrets. i liked how the ghost pov chapters were written in first person while the living human chapters were written in third person. it really sent home the concept of the ghosts being the house & i appreciated that a lot! i love how emotional this book is, and (also controversially) i love when characters are just bad /or weird people & don’t have a redemption arc - and this book had that for me
i’m giving this book 4/5 stars ! really enjoyed this & recommend to those who like similar books !

Touching passages about grief are ruined by the
anti-abortion
propaganda twist ending.

Unbelievable.
So many twists and turns, I'm genuinely speechless.

Check the warnings please, other than that, what a strong story.

Have you ever seen that British TV show “Ghosts”. That’s what I was expecting this book to be like. Turned out to be an underwhelming version of the same concept.

Basically, we find ourselves in different rooms of a house whose owner just passed. His kids and ex-wife come back to clean up and sell the house to the dismay of the ghosts who live in it. The rooms serve as a memory trigger as we learn what happened to all these characters when they were the ones inhabiting them.

I’m not sure how to explain why I did not enjoy this book. It felt like the author did not like her own characters. They all came across as gnarly and spend their time bickering constantly. There’s nothing to look forward to in the plot and I didn't really care about what happened to anyone because you don’t spend enough time with them. Even finding out the backstory of the ghosts was kind of boring. Probably won’t be picking up any other Lauren Oliver books anytime soon.

Perfectly good, but not so much my cup of tea.

Ugh. Not my jam. Lots of unlikeable people making unlikeable choices while living in a house with unlikeable ghosts who did unlikeable things to become ghosts.
