This is a brilliant book if you're interested in primary source documents about slavery and the civil war. There is so much in it. So much. I got this for a class but now my copy is all marked up with all of the things I've learned and it's become extremely useful for learning more about this period. It's not what I'd start with if you know nothing about this subject (I might recommend A Nation Under Our Feet: Black Political Struggles in the Rural South from Slavery to the Great Migration by Steven Hahn for a great survey) but if you just want primary sources, this is wonderful.

An excellent book, which I will be reading in chunks every now and again.
