Love/hate. Love when I was reading an extended coming-of-age story, beautifully and poetically written, in which you get to know the different characters and their interwovenness. Hate whenever I felt not intelligent enough to really grasp the meaning of certain parts of the book and when I sometimes didn’t understand what I was reading. But that may all be part of it. Will have to read again, and perhaps then I will feel comfortable to rate The Waves.

In the beginning, I thought it'd be impossible to understand, but in the end, I felt like it understood me: "Yet I cannot find any obstacle separating us. There is no division between me and them. As I talked I felt 'I am you'."

There's much I don't understand about this book. But in the end, I can't help but feel unreasonably alive.

I didn't want this to end. Beautiful, mesmerizing, deeply wounding, and very difficult to read. I would have given up on V. Woolf if it wasn't for this book. The story follows the lives of six children as they emerge from the depths of childhood innocence to the stuffy desperation of adulthood. I understand that this book is not necessarily everyone's cup of tea due to the way it was written, however, I might have enjoyed it because of its overwhelming and chaotic nature. In this book you will be tangled with the characters' thoughts, emotions, and the imagery around them, and you will bloom with feelings. It's surprisingly very satisfying to be in six heads at once, taking notes and escaping from one life to another at your own leisure. I also need to add that I found it absolutely impossible to read this book if I wasn't in a very very quiet room. Surely never a bad idea to end the year with this book, and thus end my 2016 reading challenge.

First let me say that Virginia Woolf is an unbelievably talented writer, and that talent is on full display in The Waves. But this book was not for me. I'll leave it at that.
