I have no idea why 'The Bat' was translated so late, when it was the first Harry Hole book written. But as a consequence I have read all the others, and loved them, before I came to this one. I don't think it's as good as Nesbo's later books, but that's to be expected with a first novel. It's set in Australia, which I guess is exotic for a Norwegian readership, but struck a few odd notes for an Australian reader. I didn't really mind those - it's easy enough to make factual mistakes and there weren't many of them, though the 'Tasmanian barramundi farmers' entertained me. The one big mistake that REALLY annoyed me was this:

'It took Birgitta quite a while to spot that he hadn't touched his wine glass.
"A little glass of wine can't hurt, can it?" she said.
"Yes, it can," Harry answered. "It can hurt."'

The thing is, Harry's an alcoholic, though he's on the wagon. Birgitta KNOWS he's an alcoholic - in fact we learned a little while back that Birgitta's father was an alcoholic too, and that she spotted Harry as one as soon as she met him. So the thing is, I don't believe for a moment that she would have said the above line, not if she had an alcoholic father.

Apart from that slip-up, the book kept me well-enough entertained. It was good to see where the Harry Hole story started, and he remains a very appealing hero. But would I have become such an instant fan if I had read this one first? Perhaps not. So maybe it's just as well that they translated it last.

Harry Hole the detective is flawed, human and engaging. A fast paced first novel introducing you to Jo Nesbo's series of novels.
