I really enjoyed Squire. I read it all in one sitting, I found the artwork engaging, and I loved the found family. I’m not big into graphic novels as a rule, but I’m very glad I gave this one a shot.

The story and art is so beautiful. This was my first graphic novel and I really enjoyed it. The story felt rushed at times, but it's still amazing. I would love to read a continuation. I think the world really needs more stories like this that talk about colonialization and imperialism.

I think it could have been 5+ stars if the story were spread out in two/three books ! I love this world building, from the first page, it sucked you right into the story! It's about Aiza who joins the army. This world has different tribes and her tribe is hugely disliked to the point she has to cover her tattoo that reveals she belongs to this tribe. This story reflects our real world perfectly, that we do judge people of where they are coming from and that we just believe what our leaders tell us. Every leader tells a story differently.
The characters are amazing, you'll fall in love with all of them. And even if they are the villains, they have a really good reason why they have that mindset. I feel like there is a lot of depth in these characters which is refreshing to see ! I especially love Doruk he is my favourite character. All the bonds and friendships were well done in this book!
I just feel like this world and story is so big that 300 pages weren't enough. I wished it would have more parts where we could discover more about every character and the world they live in. I'm not sure if I completely understand the ending, it feels like there needs to be a second book but as far as I know there won't be.....
Anyways, still recommend! I like these kinds of books where it feels like you are reading a movie!

I've been grappling for a while with how my love of girl-becomes-a-knight stories (think Tortall) has become more complicated when I think about the reality of knights—violent soldiers for conquest, representatives of empire. Squire does a fantastic job of threading these themes in a way that's approachable for young readers, while still leaving you with a sense of hope. The art is beautiful, the characters are just the right balance of flawed and endearing, and – as someone who does historical fencing for fun – the swordfighting is EXCELLENT. I want everybody to read this, especially fellow Tamora Pierce fans. Will be buying this as a gift for the kids in my life.
