Don’t feel compelled to read this right now but it will go into the pile for “DNF but willing to try again”!

"Pensei em quantas pessoas não haveria neste mundo que sofriam, e continuavam a sofrer, por não conseguirem soltar-se da sua própria teia de timidez e acanhamento e, nessa sua cegueira e loucura, erguiam um muro enorme à sua frente para ocultarem a verdade."

I kind of enjoyed not liking this? It's beautifully written and creepily gothic but all the characters are awful. Well constructed but mean and sinister or else drippy. The romance is terrible and weird, but it's meant to be and the scene with the fancy dress outfit was gripping in a slow motion car crash way.

A bit of a slow start but it gets much better after a few chapters

Haven't read anything so bad in so long. Awful read about a toxic man who tells his wife that a husband is like a "father" and an extremely insecure poor little girl who wants not to be a child but his husband's "mother"!
Crap all over.

Thoroughly enjoyable, however, the ending was so flat. Seems like du Maurier ran out of steam.
