a perfect ending to a brilliant career. this is classic le Carré — fascinating characters, outstanding writing, and an ending worthy of the master himself. i hate seeing his output come to an end, but i only have to return to his earlier works to bring him to life again.

I loved every sentence of this beautiful novel. The language and style are wonderful and I was captivated from the start. The action in Silverview alternates between two principal characters, Julian and Proctor, and both stories were gripping. But what really stands out is the dialogue, which is delivered with such elegance and economy. It'™s a gorgeous and fitting finale for a much-loved author who will be sorely missed. At least we have his novels and the opportunity to revisit them, time and again, over the years to come.

It tends to prove difficult for masters to exit their craft on top. Kobe scored 60 points in his final career game, but that performance revealed a shell of the player he once was. Carré's final book more closely resembles Bill Russell's retirement following his 11th NBA title. Russell rattled off 11 championships in 13 seasons, the sort of prolific production that will never be achieved again. The same can be said of le Carré's final novel. Yet instead of 11 championships in 13 years, le Carré exits his profession and this world :( with one final masterpiece in a long line of genre-defining narratives that will stand the test of time both literary and personal.

Interesting narration style but overall boring storyline. I had figured out the plot around page 60. It was a slog afterwards.

When I first received this book, I was originally disappointed to see that It is a novella, not a novel. However, after a shaky first chapter, le carre comes into his own, creating a great story with imaginative characters and settings.
