3 for the writing and 5 for the illustration. I find the title odd given that most animals mentioned are social, not solitary, animals. But the pictures were gorgeous. I love Dominique Ramsey! (The illustrator).

More simple than I was expecting, this beautifully illustrated book categorizes animals as social or solitary. So we get some neat terms for different animal groups, punctuated by different solitary animals. And in the end, an author's note offers more information on why some animals are more social or more solitary. Humans are generally social animals, but the author acknowledges that even social animals appreciate solitude sometimes: a balance is generally achieved.

stunning colors.
My one gripe is that too much time was spent with group animals. I get it that it made for beautiful drawings but still. More solitary animals!
The colors of the art are really stunning - vivid and imaginative.

Stunning illustration, spare prose, a little humor, fun vocabulary, and an ending that takes the reader up up into the sky to survey everything that has come before. This is a genius picture book.
