It was entertaining and made me laugh a lot, except not because of the book but at it. The disconnect between what he's advising and the stories he tells is so big that it has to be a joke. He's a good actor so I won't dispute that but the whole thing is a libertarian manifesto told by someone who I would very much never like to meet in person. The writing is decent but mostly mumbo jumbo I didn't care for.
Also RIP to earphone users because this man will do whatever to that mic to get a dramatic effect.

Thanks to my friend Hannah for buddy reading this one with me! It was a wild ride and definitely a phenomenal memoir, which Matthew performed SO WELL on audio. There is so much that I never knew about this man and his life/childhood, and even though I think I probably disagree with a lot of his political and other opinions, I REALLY enjoyed hearing his perspective. I honestly could have listened to this all day.

Highly recommend if you want a super entertaining memoir with a sprinkling of life advice.

I snagged the audiobook edition on @libby.app from my local library. I loved every minute of it. McConaughey discusses everything- his hopes, his dreams (both normal and wet), and the hardest lessons he’s learned. This isn’t a traditional memoir, but it is full of his life stories. His tales are funny, brutally honest, and full of knowledge to share with listeners. McConaughey doesn’t set out to tell listeners what to do; he strives to tell listeners what he has done. I loved learning about his travels and the reasons for some of the choices that would be most questionable in public opinion. The six hours it’ll take to listen to this story (beautifully told by McConaughey himself) will pass by in no time. I highly recommend checking out Greenlights if you’re looking for something funny but reflective 🚥

I want REAL from him. The intro and first few little chapters made my bs radar go off. After looking at reviews, I realized this is not what I’m looking for. It’s more tall-tale, find a happy moral kind of writing, and without acknowledgement of privilege. I quit when he didn’t dig into his “charmed” life. It’s not metaphysical luck - it’s just the way society was set up for ya, Matt!
