Is it really enemies to lovers if the rivalry is one-sided and mostly in her head?

This book has is a great premise with enemies to lovers, forced proximity, undercover work assignment, AND a fake relationship. But it fell short for me. The main character is childish and self-absorbed. The love interest is just a cardboard Hemsworth shaped cutout without much personality.

The couple's retreat was supposed to be like Nine Perfect Strangers but it was more like a bad 90s summer camp. It was strange that the main character was there on an undercover work assignment but after one day the other attendees were her best friends and she sells out for the first person offering contraband pizza. Even the ending was off for how the main character was portrayed for 90% of the book.

Thank you to Boltwood Books and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. I am required by law to disclose this.

I would give this 1.5⭐️s rather than two. It was a quick read to help me reach my reading goal. Personally while I did want to know what would happen next, it didn't feel fast or filled enough for me. It's a good book if you have low expectations and don't care for plot, but not something I would really recommend.

- FMC is not likeable - it's almost like she plays the victim card
- The "enemies" are not really enemies - work rival with no real tension
- The writing almost goes nowhere - like I'm just reading someone's thoughts rambling

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
HEA: yes
spice: a couple closed-door steamy scenes
TWs: cheating (not MCs), assault
standalone: yes
final thoughts: this book was a quick read but wasn’t fully what I expected. It was much more of a mystery (almost thriller at times) than I expected. Not bad, just unexpected. That being said, the story itself had a lot going on but was ultimately engaging and the writing was good and easy to read. This was a fun story about workplace rivals, a forced proximity work assignment, and some wacky situations.

Lara and Sonny are rival journalists who are assigned a job together as a fake couple. They are to go undercover at a couples' retreat. I like Portia MacIntosh's books and this one was the same. Portia is great at writing characters who are likeable.

The story did get jumbled a little bit and it was sometimes difficult to follow all the characters who were at the retreat along with their stories.

Thank you to NetGalley, Portia MacIntosh, and Boldwood Books for the e-ARC of this book. This review is my own opinion.
