I'm seeing a lot of reviews saying how disappointed they are in this book in the context of the series. I haven't read the rest of the series, and as a read-alone this book was phenomenal, if slightly confusing.

Some had said they disliked this book. I admit, it was more difficult to get into the story at the beginning (as I seem to be with every of maguire's books) and sometimes I would feel confused when he would switch between character's stories, but overall I enjoyed it. The last parts of the book were intriguing to me, and kept me interested. I guess this is a book you either enjoy or hate. I enjoyed it and can't wait to read the next part.

At first I was very disappointed in this book. Almost as much as Wicked. Maguire is a wonderful, if lengthy and sometimes mundane, author. The story of the Cowardly Lion was much less than what I expected. I'm not even sure if I can put into words how I feel about this book except that it took 3 months to read.

I did not find this as engaging as the first 2. I felt less connected to the Lion as a character, and saw less of a connection to the plot of the other novels. The ending, however, was very satisfying.

I really enjoyed Wicked but after reading Son of Witch and waiting to actually learn something, this book was just a waste of time. I now know more about a 2 characters from the 1st book I didn't care about and nothing more about the characters I want to know about. It was very disappointing.

This was just ok. It's corresponding tales of the lion's history and Yackle's past (she was in Wicked and Son of a Witch) as well as a current war started by Elphaba's younger brother. The ending made it seem like he's planning on write more Oz stories.

I loved Wicked and have not been impressed with Maguire's book since. This was interesting enough, but unless you're a fan of Wicked I wouldn't recommend it. If there are more books around Oz I will read them, but I've lost interest in Maguire as a writer.

The Boring Lion

The third part of this quadrilogy, was my least favorite so far. It's not bad by any means, but lacks the excitement of the first and second book in the series. In this vast world that Maguire has built, it is interesting to read the point of view of other characters, but I am unconvinced that the Lion (Brr) was the most appropriate choice. While the book is slow at times, the ending is pretty great as we finally get some answers to long time lingering mysteries. I am excited to see how it all wraps up in the final book.

I feel like the first half was good, but the last half dragged on. I like the clock and yackle but everything else was meh.
