I want to give this 3.5 stars. I can't believe it is 2013 and we still can't give half stars on this website.

I had to read this book for school in 5th grade 2 years ago, and I had my doubts, but it was amazing! It has the perfect balance between action, mystery, humor, and shockers. The ending was truly shocking I couldn't have seen it coming.

Charlotte, a 13 year old girl learning how to be a lady, is supposed to be crossing the Atlantic with two other families, but when no other families arrive, she has to survive being on the ocean for two month with just the crew.

I thought I wouldn't like reading this book after reading other reviews... but I still liked it after all these years. Maybe it's because I love books about the sea/sailing/piracy, but I loved this book just as much as I did when I read it in elementary school.

While I can kind of see why people think Charlotte's change from being lady-like to wanting to be a part of the crew is sudden, I can also see how it isn't. She feels tremendous guilt for causing the death of two men. It's a lot for a young girl to go through, so I can see her abandoning her lady-like tenancies in the name of justice. Avi makes it clear that Charlotte adores her dad and that he believes in justice. So, I can accept her wanting to atone for causing the death of two people.

Read this originally many years ago. Still holds up to what I remember, which was a pretty decent story of a rich privileged brat learning that things are not what she thinks.

Narrator was mostly good, but I could her her swallowing her spit a lot mer the end which was not super pleasant.

My friend Jo Jo bought this for me on impulse, saying that this was one of her favorite books as a child and that youneedtoreaditrightnoworelse.

She's a little intense.

But she's rarely wrong. I LOVED this book and it's definitely one I would reread, since it was written in the 90's, but still holds up to today's standards. I also learned a lot about ships, which is cool.

[MAJOR SPOILERS!!!]

I enjoyed the end of the book a lot more than everything else in the book. Charlotte's character development was the most amazing and best I've ever read about. I went from completely hating her to loving her personality! It all started when she joined the crew, that's when I started liking her and by the end of the book she was definitely one of my favorite characters. Jaggery was the absolute WORST! I'm so glad he died...

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would and the end, like I said, was the best!!! Charlotte's dad was a jerk and I'm glad she rejoined the crew!

I read this to Lillian and Mitchell and they both really enjoyed this adventure. If you like Pirates of the Caribbean, this is the book for you! This was a required read for Lillian’s 7th grade reading class and it was fun to read and discuss together.

I forgot I read this when I was younger - thought tbh I can’t remember the middle section so it likely didn’t leave much of an impact. I do remember some scenes fondly though! Especially the ending.

One of the best books I’ve ever read, we reread it every year. I would recommend this book to anyone.
