MEU DEUS.

Wonderful prose, but the worldbuilding felt rushed at times and dragged at others. The characters were not as three-dimensional as one would expect from a book of this length, though some were likeable enough. At times the dialogue felt as real as an overheard conversation, and other times it was full of snappy, whiplash comebacks that fell utterly short of realism.

Felt like a YA novel with gore and sexual content thrown in as set dressing; when mature themes were actually discussed, it was brief and without depth. SA used gratuitously and egregiously as a plot device, with a minor character in one instance seeming to forget about it overnight— ick.

Biggest strength was the use of tension and suspense; while I didn’t always enjoy reading Ninth House, I kept turning the pages all the same.

A competent book overall, but that should be a given from a bestselling author.

Secret magic societies and ghosts? This book was my first venture into the Dark Academia genre and I have some thoughts.

Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really liked and cared for Alex. She's sassy, tough, and has been through a lot. I enjoyed her character arch and the flashbacks helped flesh her out since the book takes place over a short period. She's a bit of a Mary Sue, and I know we're in a reality with magic but she does dodge death a few too many times. Darlington and Dawes were great side characters and I look forward to seeing them more.

Plot and Pacing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I might be a little skewed on this one since I picked it up as school started and I got sick in the middle of reading it. It definitely wasn't a page turner but the mystery and investigations kept me coming back and reading 30-50 pages in a sitting.

World Building: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nine secret magic societies at Yale hidden in plain sight? Sign me up. I found the index in the back to be helpful especially since some of the names are similar. I liked the magic in this book and look forward to more in the second.

Themes: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Part of what drew me to the Dark Academia genre was the fact that it critiques academia. This book definitely tackles privilege and fraternity culture throughout.

Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
It was enjoyable and I want to read the sequel. It definitely is weird at times and would not recommend for everyone.

I think the book tackled some difficult issues well and I could identify with some of the complex feelings of the characters. I appreciated the honesty in it.

I am apparently a sucker for books set in cold northeastern universities, with a dark or arcane academic magic system (trying to avoid using the oft-shamed dark academia), because this slapped.

I really thought I wasn't going to like the main character at first as an example of a "look at how badass I am" but honestly really ended up on her side. She's got specific and believable (also horrific) trauma and I think the impact on her personality rings true and makes her very interesting.

I am also a sucker for tall knowledgeable well-dressed dudes. This book was like fuckin catnip for me and I will be picking up the second one, fingers crossed
