True stories always hit me in the feels and this one did just that. Truly a miraculous tale of how this family really was part of the few ‘Lucky Ones’ in WW2 and how every part of their experience was different for each of the family members. Can’t wait to see how they adapted this book to the screen next.

This is one of the most extraordinary Holocaust survival stories I’ve read. All immediate members of the Kurc family survived (parents, siblings, and spouses)!
Written by a granddaughter of one of the survivors, Addy, the story is told mostly from the 5 siblings’ perspectives and describes the dangerous measures taken, excruciating decisions made, and oftentimes strokes of luck that allowed them to survive the atrocities of the Holocaust.
Miraculously, none of them were sent to death camps, though the eldest son and his wife spent time at a work camp.
Halina, the youngest and easily passable as Aryan, worked with her husband in the Underground, allowing her to save her sister, niece, and parents.
I’m don’t know why I’ve always been drawn to stories about the Holocaust - I’ve read them since I was quite young.
I’m sure it has to do with the inspiration that comes from the survivors and their unbreakable will to live.
Maybe it’s a way for me to honor those who survived, while paying tribute to those who didn’t.
Either way - this story is incredible and ends on a joyous note. The descendants of the Kurc family number in the 100’s!

As someone who has read multiple books on the Holocaust I cannot recommend this book enough! The true stories of each of the Kurc siblings, spouses and parents are filled with danger, adventure, determination to survive and ultimate a humble glimmer of hope and faith that they will all be reunited again. It was amazing to hear the vastly different directions the war took them and provides a tale that other books don’t cover. Excited to watch the new Hulu series now!
