A tough read, but a book I’d recommend to almost anyone. It speaks to the Midwest in an honest and difficult way, and offers a refreshingly clear and riff-raff free view on poverty, politics, and the impacts of both. The last couple of chapters is especially impactful.
Graphic: Sexual assault, Alcoholism, Emotional abuse, Domestic abuse, Abandonment, Sexual violence, Terminal illness, Rape, Toxic relationship, and Classism
Moderate: Mental illness, Murder, and War

I'm not really a memoir person, but this one was written rather well. The way Smarsh addresses the reader as a potential, unborn child of hers may be a bit disconcerting for some readers, but personally, it reminded me of listening to members of my family tell anecdotal stories, which I greatly enjoyed. Not sure this'll ever be a read again, but I'm not unhappy to have read it
Minor: Alcoholism, Drug abuse, Sexual harassment, and Domestic abuse

Smarsh's ability to tell a story is nearly unmatched. A great description of her situation and those around her.
