This is one of the rare cases when I thought the tv show was better than the book. Nothing wrong with the writing, but I personally needed visuals to better understand some of the concepts.

Definitely astrophysics for people in a hurry but what it is not is astrophysics for people who have zero or little knowledge about astrophysics because this book went from 0 to 100 VERY FAST. The author does a good job of adding funny little snippets though so it wasn't too bad and made up for the big concepts within the book.

I listened to the audiobook, read by the author, and it was glorious.

Audio. I recently listened to a podcast called The Universe from Crash Course pods with author John Green and Dr Katie Mack which broke down the universe into relatively easy-to-understand parts. This book does similar things and is read by Neil Degrasse Tyson. He takes large complex theories and concepts and makes them mostly relatable. It clocks in at about 4 hours on audio, making it accessible for people who are in a hurry.

So this book gives a basic overview of astrophysics in such a clever and interesting way. It was a very uneven book. The first couple chapters are very formulaic and quite dry - like a lecture. The second half was much more engaging. Neil deGrasse Tyson mixes some really interesting stories and plenty of humor in with the hard science. My favorite parts were the stories of Herschel and Uranus/George, and the intersection of the periodic table and astrophysics. The last chapter I felt was unnecessary. Had this been a book of Neil deGrasse Tyson's musings/philosophies, I would have enjoyed it more. But it was distracting in this context. Overall, I really liked this book.

An obviously intelligent, but also nice, approachable, and funny read. Just in line with what I found myself wishing for after reading some classic Sagan. I'm so grateful for NDT!

I moved on to a dog book, but I hope to finish this book soon.
