Not as good as the first two, but still pretty good. It got pretty confusing near the end.

The second book in the series was pretty much “more of the same” compared to the first one. This, the third one, takes on a slightly different tack. Sure, it’s “more of the same” in that it centers on monsters and guns, well actually it’s not that much guns in this one, but it’s not so much about Monster Hunter International as about Earl Harbinger.

This book centers on Earl Harbinger as he is entering on a side-trek from the normal MHI business. We get to know more about his background story and of course there’s some new, and old, beasties crossing his path.

At first I was a bit hesitant but it worked out quite well and was a nice deviation from the “more of the same”. I didn’t really like that he lost his werewolf powers though. Did he get them back? Well you just have to read the book to learn that, won’t you?

So, in the end this was another very enjoyable read from Larry Correia.

There are a few things you have to know to expect when you go into a Larry Correia novel. Lots of guns, lots of violence and escalating monsters that seemingly get stronger and stronger as things go along.

In this book Correia has departed from his first two novels. This is a story about Earl Harbinger the werewolf who is president of Monster Hunter International where he spends his life hunting for people like him.

Harbinger is trapped in a small town by a huge snow storm where, by some coincidence, a number of people from his past have happened to end up as well as some government monster hunters who want to horn in on Earl’s business.

If you’ve read any of these books before you know what to expect and it pretty much gives you that. Correia is good at keeping things intense, at making things worse until they can’t go any farther then doing it again. It’s kind of a formula for this type of book.

The problem with Correia’s books, and this one by virtue of it being the third one that is like this, is that all of the author’s opinions are displayed front and center. There is no such thing as a dissenting voice that comes from anybody but the bad guys.

All the good guys like guns and know how to use them. If a character is willing to use guns to defend him/herself then they are good people. If they are not then they are cowards and idiots.

Also the government is evil, out to get you and take away your guns and probably mostly staffed by a bunch of self congratulatory imbeciles out to make themselves look good.

I would like a character with a different opinion to be shown in a positive light, just once.

That said. Correia knows how to tell a good story. He knows how to make a compelling mystery, how to show characters who are interesting to see, and how to make the story exciting and always escalating in a way that doesn’t become repetitive or boring.

Great series. Phenomnally book. Correia is up there with Butcher, The Gordons, Golden, & Farnsworth. Cannot wait for the next one.

These books are really fun palette cleansers between heavier/longer books. I enjoyed getting the backstory and some of the world building here with Earl, but basically I missed the rest of the usual MHI crew. Also this story is werewolf dominant and that's not my favorite. Still a lot of fun though.

An excellent addition the the series, and I love the change if POV to Harbinger. MHI's werewolf mythology is fascinating.

I love this whole series, but I love the change of pace the author made with this book. It’s still action packed, it’s still suspenseful, but it is much more atmospheric than the previous books. I love how he switched between different characters, allowing you to really understand a situation from all sides while staying on track and not deviating from the action. No spoilers, but if you weren’t convinced Earl was a badass before, this book will show you how awesome he really is. Oh and I love that he was able to add some backstory to earl that was still applicable to the current situation.
