It’s not the worst thing I’ve read but I just got so lost in the weeds!

Didn't enjoy as much as the Iliad,,, but also the love I have for the Iliad is so insane, maybe that's not a good bar.

While it did not take me as long as it took Odysseus to get home, this book did take me AWHILE to finish. However, I am happy I did. While there are many issues I have with this epic, mostly about how women are treated and valued, I realize those issues are due to its age and can appreciate the book for its incredible ability to keep the public drawn in for hundreds of years.
While I am finally happy I read this tale in its full volume, my favorite part had to be the essay Emily Wilson included before the book began. I agree with her fully and I found her iteration refreshing from the ones I had to read in high school. All in all, I enjoyed this epic, even with its faults. Also I agree with Emily, the last book seems out of place and out of order. It leaves the story I feel as open when the previous book seems to close the whole tale. Perhaps time has rearranged the books, or maybe homer themselves decided that this story is meant to be that way, or maybe they wanted to remind us of Odysseus’ spoils and how he is a soldier first, not the lover he is suggested to be in the 23rd book.

The only reason this doesn’t get 5⭐️ is that Odysseus is a walking ick. Loved this translation though - making the odyssey way more accessible!

I know that the Fagles translation is not universally adored, but I really enjoyed this translation. Note: have not read Lombardo's translation of [b:Odyssey|1388|Odyssey|Homer|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1158208332s/1388.jpg|3356006], but that is next.
