A good entry in the series, but a little bogged down in the grittiness and loses focus on Batman, almost making him lose agency and behave just as a plot tool for the riddler.

Didn’t work for me and I’m a huge King fan. Has his Moore fandom on full display and it just didn’t work for me. Art is fantastic tho and it has some cool moments, but for the most part it feels completely nonessential

Great set up, cool premise. Gets a little muddied when Riddler supposedly gets so much power so quickly. The guards killing one another thing was sort of weird and didn’t make much sense. But overall, a good tone, strong ending, and good plotting.

Maybe I should’ve read The Killing Joke first but the past is the past. I’ll read it soon enough.

I really felt Edward’s frustrations as a kid. His father was so awful, putting all of his insecurities on his kid.

Well done, Batman! I’m pleased with how you handled this.

I did NOT vibe with this. Mitch Gerads is an incredible artist, and I like Tom King's writing style (including here), but... what was the point of this? This really demonstrates the limits of psychological realism in superhero comics, in my opinion. This was a dour story that managed to say nothing much but exceptionally well. Some lovely stuff here but boy, this left me cold.
