I did not enjoy this book. Normally, I like futuristic dystopias, but I disliked the main character. I was annoyed at the pieces of the plot that were concealed. Some of the elements on the ship could have been fun in a different novel. I didn't get the point of the dark core of this novel. The basic idea with the birds, etc., was an interesting kernel that just never popped.

This book gave me so much perspective and after having finished it I feel grateful that I got to read this story.

The only things keeping me from giving this a smooth 2 stars are the beauty of the language in this book and the overall concept. I initially thought the mass extinction plot line wasn’t focused enough for me, but I did appreciate the underlying nature of it - species are dying at a rate where the people in this book can’t think about it all the time. Aside from the pretty language and the dystopian backdrop this book was simply not for me. The narrator is insufferable in a way that I can’t put my finger on. I think it’s the “life is so hard but I’m sooo flighty hehe” nature of it all. Also I could see the “twist” at the end coming from 700 miles away. Not a bad book, but definitely not worth the hype I personally saw about it.

I didn’t like the way it ended (though it was appropriate for the genre). I would’ve liked to hear more about Ennis and the other friends she made on the fishing boat.

Beautiful haunting book. View of a terrifying and still hopeful future. Reminder that we are never to small to do even just a little.
