LOVED this book. I like that it could stand alone or can really hook you into the series. The main character is a bada$$ and I even like how the sideline characters support her arch. Big fan and would highly recommend to most people, though it does get pretty dark at times.

“We all bear scars. Mine just happen to be more visible than most.”

Celaena Sardothien, a bad-ass female assassin. Whenever she thinks about killing someone with x steps, I get the shivers because I know that she definitely can. That's how bad-ass she is even though she was a salt miner for almost a year.

So this story is the continuation of The Assassin's Blade story if you end up reading it first (which I did hehe). It showed the challenges Calaena faced in order to win the competition and be the King's Champion. As I've previously mentioned in the TAB's review, the world-building was pretty fast: here's a world where there used to be magic but then ten years ago, Adarlan's king banned it and kill people who does, but he's currently holding a competition where different types of people, specifically killers and murderers, have to compete to be the King's Champion. They literally shoved us into the world just like that. I did have fun though specially since I'm able to jump from one character to another - the POV changes every once in a while although the focus would be Calaena's. I love the love triangle between Calaena, Dorian and Chaol, so that's a nice touch. It's an adjustment for me since I pretty much live for romance books but this one is fantasy and plot heavy. I also get to see the Adarlan's assassin befriend someone. I know it's an eight-book series so I guess there would be blanks here and there that would be solved in the later part of the series but there's so many questions that I'm so tempted to just search off the web and it's itching my curiosity so much. Lesson learned from ACOTAR though, try not to because you wouldn't know if someone had died and you'll be spoiled.

Got a little question at the end of the story:
When Chaol killed Cain and he was stunned and afterwards, he was traumatized by it. I was wondering how a captain of the guards not killed someone yet. It just bugs me so much because it was explicitly showed how it bothered him.

Also, I can see why The Assassin's Blade should be the first book to read. There has been parts in the book where Calaena was pertaining to certain events that were explained/told through the five short stories of TAB.

Quick, easy, and very enjoyable read. She hooks you from the start and gets you very invested in the characters very quickly. I very much enjoyed the elusiveness of the magic in the book, I look forward to learning more about it in the series.

The book is entertaining but I wouldn’t say its good or great. I have mixed feelings about the writing and certain plot lines (ex. the repetition about Celeana and Dorian’s beauty). At the same time, I liked some of the world-building and the friendship between Celeana and Nehemia.

okay initial thoughts on the characters
celaena: i generally like her but sometimes she's kind of annoying, at the beginning when she kept saying all the ways she could kill people i was like "is this satire or...." but she grew on me
chaol: my fave character! i liked that he was kind of bitch but u could see his soft spots shining thru, it felt like he was kind of conflicted the whole time which i liked
dorian: lowkey kind of a pussboy but there's nothing really to Hate about him, he's just kinda meh rn

overall this book was pretty good, though it got a bit repetitive like halfway through and i felt like i was just reading the same scenes over and over again. oh and i love nehemia she's kind of slaying the game
