God. Just, like, this book is so perfect. It is so lovely and so dark and so hopeful. The central protagonist, Yamilet, practically leaps off the pages, and while I personally found myself most entranced and represented by her brother Cesar, the carefully constructed cast of characters is all-around absolutely excellent. Highly recommend.

I had high hopes for this book, but it disappointed me. Don't take me the wrong way: this is a very important book about a very important topic. How many teenagers (and adults) suffer in silence, trying to hyde who they are? When the rejection comes from your own house, what can you expect form everyone else?

I felt sorry for Yammi many times throughout this book: trying to be straight, feeling the catholic guilt... The part where she starts saving money waiting to be kicked out of her house broke my heart.

Now let's get to the negative points: this is the slowest of slow paced if I've ever read - we spend half the book just getting to know Yammi and then everything is rushed towards the end; the lack of communications between that family just was a deal breaker for me; her mother constantly showing love and affection towards Cesar and never Yammi; the mother being a complete homophobic and then, by the end, everything is reversed; the father (I don't need to say more); the way things turn out to be at the end... was just 'meh'...

Anyway, maybe this book was written for a different target audience, maybe I'm just not the right age. Despite all this, I think this book can help someone.

This YA coming of age tale deals with some tough subject matter- navigating coming out, homophobia, racism, toxic friendships, mental health/ suicidal ideation, bullying and religious indoctrination.

Yami is a 16 year old Mexican teenager who is trying to navigate private Catholic School with her brother after he dealt with some issues at the public school and Yami was outed as a Lesbian by her best friend. She has a lot of pressure to be the "good" daughter and protect her younger brother and work to help the family. I related with the perfectionist and having to care for younger siblings aspect of the book and how hard that role is to carry. The fear that Yami carries with being outed at the new school and with her family made me cry. I cannot imagine that fear that so many young LGBTQIA2s+ people feel but that they do not have the support they need just makes me so sad. The teens at the school making fun of queer people and the racist comments made my heart even heavier for these young kids having to deal with so much at such a young age.

This is an important book for kids to have and feel seen in.
