While the colonists are to be shipped to another planet, 70 year old Ofelia, decides she doesn't want to go, and stays on the planet to live alone. Except she's not alone on it after a group of humans is murdered. First contact with aliens/alien creatures, Ofelia pretty much ends up being friends, and actually finding a new family with these friendly (overall) creatures.
Really enjoyed it.

I'm sitting here grinning as I finish this book. I want Ofelia to be my neighbour, we can exchange a smile over the fence and then respect eachothers personal space by avoiding eye contact and not speaking except for when we share freshly baked bread (well, I dont bake... but damn, I want to try some of that bread she's always baking).

Sure, some bits were weird and there were some beliefs that Ofelia had which I personally don't agree with. But, thats not gonna stop me from enjoying this story thoroughly while lounging here in my candle lit room with a cuppa and a cozy blanket.

I discovered this book because I wanted to read more hopepunk after reading A Psalm For The Wild Built. I hadn't even heard of hopepunk untill I googled what genre Psalm is.

I'm hooked.

Warm, radical hope.

WHERE DO I FIND MORE HOPEPUNK. GIVE IT TO ME. I NEED IT. PLEASE.

This is a great, slow paced science fiction novel that tackles big themes like colonialism, capitalism and ageism through the eyes of a very tired (as in fed up, not lack of energy) woman who's had it up to here with humanity and does the best she can to escape its systems that have rejected her (and as a result finds herself at the forefront of a first contact event). It's very thoughtful in how it's careful to always have the circumstances of our POV character front and center without condescension or pity, and it makes for a unique, believable and endearing read.
