The book focuses on “symptomers” - people who turn into something else, fall asleep for years, split in two, etc,

but as the book progresses we can see that they aren’t so much medical mysteries but rather people suffering from capitalism.

So I thought the tone of this book would be more humorous and whimsical based on the premise. However it’s a deeply cynical book with miserable characters. I did not enjoy this book and the fat phobia made it upsetting.

Most of the trigger warning content is in the latter part of the book. Skip the restaurant scene (which depicts a weird form of bulimia) and the scene after the narrator is tasered. You won't really miss any plot points.
