It's weird... I don't read these types of books often, so I found it very weird, but enjoyable.

The beginning of the book is slow… it almost feels like a collection of short stories… but in the end it all comes together and really pays off… great ending

This was decent but could have been better, I think, if it had committed either to focusing more on the freak-show short stories or on developing the Kafkaesque story of the accidental research assistant. As it was, I feel like the two aspects of the book detracted a bit form each other. I'd read one of the stories about a symptomer and then feel jerked into the research assistant's story. Once I'd gotten into that and wanted to see where it was going, I was interrupted by one of the symptomer stories. The balance was just off for me. The same kind of goes for the humor: it was decent but could have been better. I smiled a lot but never so much as chuckled and I couldn't tell you a single thing that elicited one of those smiles.
Honestly, I don't feel that the book was enjoyable enough to be worth having to read a first-person perspective of being tortured. I feel like that could have gone better and without losing the surreal sense of helplessness that it invoked.
I don't think that this book will stick with me much, but it wasn't a bad read. I suspect that I'd try something else by the author if someone recommended it to me.
