I believe this series tried too hard... The characters were not that memorable or lovable, the plot was boring, and the ending left questions unanswered and a lot to be desired.

I think this book is closer to 3.5 stars for me. It was a good story and a cute ending, but left me wanting more story and development for Magnus, Blitz, Hearth, Sam, and Alex; especially the relationship between Alex and Magnus. I could have done without TJ, Mack, and Halfborn’s stories to give the original five a better story and more character development. The climax with Loki also was just meh for me, but it ended up being a cute story about friendship. Maybe this needed more than three books. Also, did Sam actually leave the Valkyrie? It was never really answered.

(edit: drinking game! take a shot every time i use the word ‘plot’)

1) this has to be the funniest trilogy i've ever read, no book has ever made me laugh out loud so much as this whole trilogy did
2) i could knock a star off solely for the reason that otis the goat wasn't in this specific book, but i won't do it. for now.
3) i absolutely fucking adored every character seriously
4) it's not like i could ever forget but this was a very strong reminder of why i loved the riordanverse so much as a kid
5) if you're a fan of the power of friendship, this is 100% the book for you

genuinely, my only criticism for this book might be the fact that there were too many sub plots going on, half of which were patched up quite hurriedly. if you're a fan of plot-driven books, you wouldn't exactly adore how the plot unfolds in this one. personally i don't really mind plots going to hell and i loved the characters so much i couldn't care less—but following the plot was a bit of a struggle occasionally. but again, i didn't care too much about the plot, so i can live with that.

OKAY this review contains spoilers and personal ranting about the book. You have been warned.

It’s 1 am. I’m crying my eyes out. I just, somehow can’t believe that I’ve finished the Magnus Chase triology. So much laughter & tears. I remember reading a part of it the day before Midsommar (since I’m Swedish and celebrate Midsommar) and Magnus mentioned that they had to finish something before midsommar, and I just kinda laughed like “yep well you’ll have to hurry up, cuz it’s tomorrow!”. I love Magnus Chase SO. MUCH. This book was just as beautiful as the other two. Hearthstone and Blitzen remain my absolute favorite characters in the entire Riordanverse. My love for Magnus and Alex is absolutely unmatched however. THE KISS SCENES? PLS I WAS SCREAMING IN HAPPINESS. I love the two of them so much. Both as a couple and individual characters. Samirah is absolutely amazing and wonderful in every possible way. I can’t deny that. Mallory, TJ & Halfborn are awesome as well. These books have been my comfort books for months so it does hurt to have to let it go, but I knew it’d come to its end eventually.  I will hope for another book or some kind of new content, though I highly do doubt the chance of that. Annabeth and Percy actually being in the book is the best thing ever. As both a MCGA & PJO fan that was the best possible “crossover”. I know that words won’t be able to describe how much I love these books, so I’ll have to end it here. I do however know that it is a time in my life that I’ll never forget, and that it created such special memories. But, everything must come to an end. So that’s it for me. The adventures are finished.
